Inspection Evidence

Loft Heat Loss Is Easy To Miss From Inside

Thin, compressed or patchy insulation, gaps at the joists, and blocked eaves are rarely visible from the room below. A loft inspection shows what is actually happening at ceiling level before any work is recommended.

  • Gaps At Joists
  • Blocked Eaves Vents
  • Missing At The Hatch
  • Uneven Depth

Why It Matters

A Warmer Home Starts At Ceiling Level

Loft insulation is one of the most impactful places to reduce heat loss in a typical UK home, provided it is the right depth, evenly laid, and paired with sensible loft ventilation.

Heat Escapes Through The Roof

Warm air rises. Without an even, well-laid layer at ceiling level, a large share of the heat you pay for is lost straight through the roof.

Cold Upstairs Rooms

Bedrooms that feel chillier than the rest of the house are a common sign that loft insulation is missing, thin, or unevenly laid.

Condensation Depends On Ventilation

Insulation alone isn't the full picture. Eaves airflow and balanced ventilation keep the loft healthy once heat loss is reduced.

Common Signs

What We Often See On Site

The signs below frequently point to loft heat loss or a ventilation issue worth checking before insulating further.

Cold Upstairs Rooms

Cold Upstairs Rooms

Why It Matters

A common indicator that heat is escaping through the ceiling rather than being held in.

Thin Or Compressed Existing Insulation

Thin Or Compressed Existing Insulation

Why It Matters

Below current recommended depth, or flattened by storage, means reduced thermal performance.

Frost Patterns On The Roof

Frost Patterns On The Roof

Why It Matters

When other roofs stay frosted and yours melts first, heat is leaving the loft faster than it should.

High Heating Use

High Heating Use

Why It Matters

If the heating runs hard but rooms still feel cold, ceiling-level heat loss is often a contributor.

Condensation Or Musty Smell In The Loft

Condensation Or Musty Smell In The Loft

Why It Matters

Points to a ventilation or moisture issue that should be assessed before insulating further.

Honest Sequencing

Not Every Loft Is Suitable Right Now

Active leaks, condensation, inadequate eaves ventilation or existing spray foam may need addressing first. CRS also handles ventilation and damp, so we can sequence the work honestly rather than insulating over a problem.

Done Properly

Why Correct Loft Insulation Matters

Correct Depth To Standard

Laid to current recommended depth between and across the joists - no shortcuts.

Ventilation Maintained At Eaves

Airflow paths are protected so the loft can still breathe once heat loss is reduced.

Even, Gap-Free Coverage

Continuous coverage with no cold bridges, awkward gaps or compressed sections.

Breathable, Moisture-Aware Approach

Mineral wool that lets moisture pass through, paired with sensible ventilation thinking.

Ventilation Tie-In

A Warmer Loft Still Needs Airflow

Reducing heat loss is only half the picture. Keeping the eaves clear and balancing extraction elsewhere in the home helps moisture move where it should.

Ventilation & Extraction

Social Housing & Commercial

Void, Tenanted & Communal Lofts

Planned and responsive works across void and tenanted stock and communal lofts, with tenant-safe working and landlord completion documentation as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

We install to the depth recommended by current UK guidance for mineral wool at ceiling level, laid between and across the joists so coverage is even and gap-free.

Insulation by itself does not cause condensation, but it can change how moisture behaves in the loft if airflow is restricted. We protect the eaves ventilation during install and will flag if additional ventilation is needed before work proceeds.

Yes. Where you need to store items, we fit walkboards above the insulation so it is not compressed underfoot. We confirm the area you want boarded during the inspection.

A typical loft top-up or full installation takes around half a day to a day on site with one to two installers, depending on loft size, access and whether walkboards are included.

Most accessible lofts in sound condition are suitable. Active leaks, untreated damp, inadequate eaves ventilation, or existing spray foam may need addressing first. We confirm suitability at the free inspection and explain any sequencing.

It depends on the condition and depth of what is already there. If the existing layer is sound and well laid, a top-up is often appropriate. If it is compressed, contaminated or unevenly distributed, replacement is sometimes the better option. We base the recommendation on what we see in your loft.
